An Open Letter to Bernie Sanders Supporters

Dear Berners,

The Green Party welcomes you and this country and the planet need you. Many of us in the Green Party are former Sanders supporters. In 2016 when Bernie endorsed Hillary Clinton, we left the Democratic party and joined the Greens. We were grateful there was a party to turn to that was standing up for everything we had worked and hoped for at a time when we were feeling politically lost.

GPVA Statement on the Novel Coronavirus

On Wednesday, March 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) to be a pandemic. The uncertain nature and health impacts of the virus driving an abundance of caution has already caused a great deal of disruption globally. This disruption will likely continue and worsen in the coming weeks.

GPVA Calls On Virginians to Reject Misleading Redistricting Constitutional Amendment

RICHMOND, VA – The Virginia General Assembly has passed a proposed amendment to the Virginia Constitution which will create a partisan commission of legislative elites and their chosen citizens to draw new district lines in Virginia. This amendment is being falsely sold as a solution to gerrymandering. In reality, it will reinforce partisan politics in Virginia by giving these legislators the power to decide Virginia’s congressional and legislative districts every 10 years.

The GPVA Calls For Addressing Root Issues Driving 2A Divisions, Honoring the Message of Dr. Martin Luther King

The Green Party of Virginia honors the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and calls for deescalation and nonviolent solutions as a highly contentious 2A rally gathers in Richmond, including outside groups far beyond Virginia, on this Martin Luther King Day. We must look to the root causes driving the gun rights controversy in a system that profits from our division.

In the words of Dr. King, “Nonviolence is a powerful and just weapon, which cuts without wounding and ennobles the man who wields it. It is a sword that heals.”

Green Party of Virginia Condemns Recent Airstrikes on Iraq; Calls for De-Escalation of Tension

RICHMOND, VA -- The Green Party of Virginia condemns the recent airstrike on Iraqi soil by the Trump administration which targeted and killed high ranking Iranian and Iraqi officials. This strike is likely illegal under U.S. and international law, made without consultation of Congress, the United Nations or the Iraqi government. The Pentagon has also failed to provide exculpatory evidence of a direct threat against American soil, despite its claims of acting in self-defense.

Green Party of Virginia Opposes New Fossil Fuel Infrastructure; Calls for Real Green New Deal

At this time when we must ban all new fossil fuel infrastructure including the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, Mountain Valley Pipeline and Buckingham Compressor Station in Union Hill, Democratically controlled Virginia is threatening two new compressor stations, one in Prince William County and one in the city of Chesapeake, and the expansion of the existing Ladysmith compressor station in Caroline County.

Green Party of Virginia Opposes Proposed Chickahominy and C4GT Power Plants

Calls for A Moratorium on New Fossil Fuel Infrastructure

RICHMOND, VA -- The Green Party of Virginia (GPVA) opposes the gas-fired power plant proposed by Chickahominy Power, LLC, a subsidiary of Balico, LLC as well as NOVI Energy’s C4GT facility proposed to be built a mile away in Charles City County. Both will contribute to climate change and negatively impact the health of nearby communities.

Arlington Green Party: End Marijuana Prosecution in Arlington

The Arlington Green Party in an open letter to the Arlington Commonwealth Attorney Theo Stamos have asked her to stop prosecuting people caught with small amounts of marijuana in Arlington. She has prosecuted over 300 individuals over the past few years for marijuana possession, most of them young black and Latino men. The life of a person convicted of a felony is often ruined--federal student loans and Pell grants are prohibited, and a criminal record makes finding a job very difficult.
